Rachel Deacon Paintings

Image

The gallery has just been instructed to sell two wonderful paintings by British Artist Rachel Deacon. Rachel Deacon was born in 1969 and studied contemporary art at Chelsea School of Art graduating in 1991. Since then she has become a very successful artist with a very recognisable style.

Rachel Deacon focus is on the female figure. Shapes and contours of the body are used to create paintings with a strong composition, coupled with rich colours, shadow and an ambience of light. Her paintings relate back to the classical masters, although the women in her paintings are dressed in clothes drawn from 1920s to post-war.

Talking about her contemporary paintings Rachel Deacon says “I try to keep the era in the painting ambiguous. However I do love the style of the 1940’s.”  Women in Deacon’s paintings are self assured and provocative. They appear to convey an inner strength and communicate a sense of narrative with a quiet dignity and timeless quality.

Scottish artist: Jane Cruickshank solo show at Red Rag

OUT OF THE ORDINARY: Jane Cruickshank solo exhibition

Scottish Art: Contemporary Paintings by Jane Cruickshank

The latest exhibition at Red Rag Gallery features Scottish artist Jane Cruickshank who is gaining a reputation for her luminous fine art still life and figure painting; a reputation that will no doubt be enhanced by this remarkable solo exhibition, which is now open at the Red Rag Gallery in Stow on the Wold, Gloucestershire.

Paintings from Jane have been a regularly shown at the gallery for the last five years but this is her first solo exhibition with Red Rag. It focuses on her still life work and includes delicately defined paintings of vessels of different materials (ceramic, metallic), household items (such as scissors), fruit and books – in each case helping us to see how the ordinary and the day-to-day reveal the extraordinary as we take time to observe them.

Although this exhibition will concentrate on Jane’s still life work, her initial interest was in painting figures – during her studies she concentrated on producing representational figures placed in large minimal spaces to evoke a sense of isolation and vulnerability. She is fascinated with the play and effects of light and shadow on a figure or object and creating a strong presence within a space. She says, “I started painting the figure while at Art College, mainly self-portraits or members of the family usually on large canvases with the figure placed off centre to create an image of vulnerability. Pattern and surface is a tool that I use to explore how the dominance of appearance manipulates the identity.”

Her paintings have all the quality and depth associated with her principal medium of oils, successfully combining intense realism with a luminescence and clarity that give them a very contemporary feel. Her work is immediately accessible. Red Rag Gallery Manager, Carole Teagle comments, “We are delighted to host this fascinating solo show by Jane Cruickshank. There is a gentleness and peace to Jane’s still life paintings that gives them an enduring quality and causes us to take time to ponder and reflect, a precious offering of stability at a time of fast movement and change.”

NOTES Jane Cruickshank BA (Hons), MA (b. 1976, Speyside) studied Fine Art at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen from 1994-99. She was commended in the Coopers and Lybrand Competition (1996); won a John Kinross Scholarship to Florence (1997), awarded by the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh; and won the James Torrance Memorial Award from the Royal Glasgow Institute (1998). She has exhibited extensively, particularly in Scottish Art Galleries where she has already presented a number of solo exhibitions.

British artist Colin Kent at Red Rag Gallery

'House by the Sea' by Colin Kent RI

British artist Colin Kent at Red Rag

Red Rag have announced that British artist Colin Kent is to show at the gallery. Kent is an artist member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI) and was born in London in 1934. He studied painting and architecture at Walthamstow College of Art, and worked for a number of years as an architect. He was elected a member of the Royal Institute in 1971.

Over the last forty years Colin Kent has produced a remarkable body of work of superb quality. He is a master in combining the use of ink and gouache in conjunction with watercolour to achieve a textured and delicate tonal effect in his paintings. The sea and coastal locations have been a constant inspiration for Colin and he especially loves the locations of East Anglia. But his paintings are much more about capturing the atmosphere of a place and finding locations where solitude predominates and natural forms have softened the evidence of man. His art works display great sense of atmosphere and are often stark and haunting. He has the ability to successfully create feelings of isolation without loneliness or melancholy.

Speaking about his paintings Colin Kent says: ‘It is definitely a Romantic thing with me. I find people love lonely places and and the people who buy my art work are romantics too. I am drawn to desolate places often with crumbled down buildings. I try to keep on experimenting, and the more I use mixed media, the more I experiment. I choose a subject and then treat it in a modern way. I am always looking for different things to paint which present a challenge, hence the variety in my subject matter.’

In additon to Red Rag gallery Colin Kent paintings have been exhibited at: the Royal Institute; the Academy; the Guildhall; Royal West of England Academy and at a number of leading British and American art galleries. For further details email the gallery or
