Cornish Art in Bath

'Sea Pinks' by Cornish artist Amanda Hoskin

The paintings of successful Cornish based British Artist Amanda Hoskin are now on show at the Red Rag Gallery in Bath. Amanda Hoskin is known for her evocative and atmospheric Landscape paintings of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Over the past few years Amanda Hoskin has emerged as a leading exponent of Cornish landscape painting. She knows her subject well. Her paintings of Cornish coastlines are developed as a result of many hours spent walking the coast and observing the lovely rich landscape. Her long term physical engagement with this enchanting environment provides her with a depth of knowledge which is both intellectually succinct and emotionally fluent. What you see in a painting by Amanda is her vision of her journey and this is not the vision of a visitor, it is the vision of a native of this landscape.

In addition to Red Rag Amanda Hoskin has exhibited her paintings at a number of British Art Galleries but this is the first time her art work have featured at any of the art galleries in Bath .

‘Adam and Eve’ at Red Rag Bath Art Gallery

Gordon Mitchell has been described as one of the finest Scottish draughtsman and imaginative painters of his generation. His art work has won numerous awards and his paintings are represented in a number of important public and private art collections including Kansas City Art Institute, Paisley Art Institute, Ralli Museums, Royal Bank of Scotland, Scottish Arts Council, and the University of Edinburgh.

'Adam' by Scottish artist Gordon Mitchell

Gordon Mitchell’s paintings display a balance and superb tonal harmony. His paintings are beautifully executed and can be amusing at times, at others ironic. The paintings range over many subjects from fruit and ceramic vessels to the human form represented as all manner of objects. Gordon is certainly the master of unexpected juxtaposition and constantly delights his many art collectors and admirers with his technical brilliance and offbeat sense of humour. Mitchell uses humour, pathos and irony in his paintings to interpret his thoughts and make them palatable to a world that might sometimes rather not be reminded of the problems it faces, collectively or individually.

David Farrant art at Red Rag Gallery

'David Farrant - Time for a Drink'

British artist: David Farrant

Today we are featuring one of the leading British Artists David Farrant who was born in London in 1938.

David Farrant studied art at St. Martin’s, London. Following his training he has developed an impressive career which included art exhibitions at major British Art Galleries including the National Portrait Gallery and at the Mall Gallery in London with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He established a reputation as one of the finest British painters of portraiture in the country.

Today David Farrant no longer paints portraits preferring to concentrate on his figurative painting. He works in Oil and Acrylic often on a large format so that his paintings have ‘presence’ in the domestic environment. David tries to hint at a story in the composition of each painting, but it is the impact of light and especially sunlight which is a constant inspiration to him.

Like Hopper or Vettriano, David Farrant’s primary inspiration stems from everyday scenes of human interaction. Using these day to day images and outstanding observational skills Farrant creates wonderful paintings with muted colours and complex shadows. His preferred medium is either acrylics or oils, and his large-scale compositions have a huge impact whether displayed in a corporate or a domestic environment.

Talking about his art works David Farrant says: “I like to think my paintings work on two levels – firstly, and in a formal sense, as compositions in which strong tonal contrast, accents of colour and simplification of form are key elements. Secondly, and in a narrative sense, I hope they carry a mood and the possibility of an unfinished story which the viewer can share”.

David Farrant original paintings are now a welcome addition to the art galleries in Bath and are showing at Red Rag in Brock Street. Also at the Bath Art Gallery are David Farrant Limited Edition Prints.
