British art: Painting 'Mousehole' by Mike Bernard RI

This painting was delivered to the gallery this week. It features a view of the Cornish harbour and fishing village of Mousehole. Mousehole is a location much favoured by British artists. This contemporary mixed media painting comes from leading British artist Mike Bernard.

Mike Bernard produces highly textured semi-abstract paintings often executed in mixed media incorporating collage and acrylics. Bernard enjoys bringing an experimental approach to his watercolour and oil paintings. Regular subjects include coastal and street scenes in the English West Country and Italy. Speaking about his British Art Mike says: “What attracts me most is the pattern of buildings, boats and similar features in a scene. I build a painting by putting in blocks of colour to develop a pattern which is pleasing to my eye in colours which are harmonious, bringing in feelings of spontaneity, freshness and freedom.”

Scottish artist: John Kingsley painting 'Cap Ferrat'

Today’s featured Scottish Artist is John Kingsley

Scottish artist John Kingsley was born in Glasgow in 1956. He studied drawing and painting at Glasgow School of Art from 1973-77. His art tutors included James Robertson, David Donaldson and Geoffrey Squire.

John Kingsley has established a reputation as a leading Scottish contemporary artist. He was a finalist in the Hunting Art Prizes competition in London in 1989, 1993 and 1998, and was highly commended in the same competition in 1996. In 1991 Kingsley won the William Bowie Landscape Prize and in 1992 the Mary Armour Award the Paisley Art Institute. Since 1987, John has been an artist member of the council of the Paisley Art Institute.

Today Scottish artist John Kingsley has an international reputation with art works in many public and private art collections across Europe, Australia, Canada and the USA. His paintings are found in the art collections of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, Argyle and Bute District Council and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow.

Today’s featured British Artist is Tina Morgan

Tina Morgan was born in the British seaside village of Lynton, Devon in 1952. She studied art and design in Cornwall and after gaining an S.I.A.D. in industrial design went to work as an Art Director in London for a number of creative advertising agencies. During this time she won many awards including two at the Cannes Film Festival.

In 1985 Tina Morgan decided to change career direction and began painting as a full time professional artist. Since then Tina has exhibited her art work widely and is known know for her impressionistic paintings of the coasts, markets and streets of the UK, Europe and America.

Today Tina Morgan has established herself as an artist with a reputation for capturing the light and the lazy day holiday buzz of people relaxing on the south Devon beaches or in cafe scenes. Her softness of palette and great skill in observing and depicting people creates art work with a timeless quality.

Today we feature British Artist Ken Howard

Ken Howard is a Royal Academy artist with a worldwide reputation. He has exhibited extensively, both nationally and internationally. He was born in 1932 and studied art at Hornsey School of Art.

Ken Howard is a master at capturing light in both oil and watercolour paintings. Today he is known as one of the leading British Artists for his ability to fuse light and atmosphere in his contemporary paintings. The subjects for Ken’s contemporary paintings range from studio nudes to Venetian scenes and Cornish beaches.

Ken Howard’s numerous art awards include: First Prize in the Lord Mayor’s Art Award in 1966; a Prize Winner in the John Moores Art Exhibition, Liverpool in 1978; first prize in the Hunting Group Art Awards; and the Critics Prize at Sparkasse Karlsruhe in 1985. He now lives and works in London or in his Venetian and Cornish studios.

Atkins is an artist who excels at capturing the magic and majesty of the British countryside. His strong and confident brushwork successfully records the essence of his subjects be they landscape or urban cityscapes. Atkins produces highly textural oil paintings full of light, shade and atmosphere.
