'Antiquities Ato' by Jeremy Barlow

'Antiquities Ato' by Jeremy Barlow

One of the first artists to be showing at our newest gallery in Bath is British artist Jeremy Barlow . Jeremy Barlow travels extensively, painting not only the fine European cities but often in the small villages and towns “off the beaten track” . From sun-dappled Venetian balconies to busy boulevard cafés, weathered and intriguing shop fronts to quiet provincial villages, Jeremy Barlow delights and excels in painting wonderfully atmospheric and evocative scenes.

Jeremy Barlow delights and excels in painting wonderfully atmospheric and evocative scenes. A characteristic of Barlow’s paintings is the way in which he creates an impressive interaction of light and dark. The strong contrast of deep, rich shadows with pools of bright sunlight, so familiar in southern European countries, is employed to great effect.

Mike Bernard paintings are available from the Red Rag Gallery in Bath. For further details email the gallery or

Scottish art: artist Charles MacQueen RGI RSW

Spice Shop, Jaipur by Charles MacQueen

Spice Shop, Jaipur by Charles MacQueen

Later this month Red Rag open another gallery in the classical and elegant Georgian City of Bath. The new gallery is in Brock Street which links two world famous landmarks – The Royal Crescent and The Kings Circus.

The new gallery will open with Scottish Art from one of the Scotland’s leading contemporary artists – Charles MacQueen.

Charles MacQueen was born in Glasgow in 1940. He was educated at St Aloysius College and then attended the Glasgow School of Art. After graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1965, Charles MacQueen pursued a successful career in Art Education. Throughout his teaching years Charles continued to paint and exhibited widely. Eventually in 1990 Charles retired to concentrate full time as a professional artist.

MacQueen says: “My most important influence was John Dewey, whose work I read when I was training to be a teacher. His book “Art as Experience” made strong emphasis on learning through doing, and Art as a response to lived experience”.

MacQueen has made a number of visits to Tunisia and Morocco. The latest art works at Red Rag reflect Charles’s fascination with the two countries. He is inspired by the stark visual contrasts between strong blinding sunlight and black dark bazaars full of rich reds, golds and turquoise.

Cornish art - Polperro Harbour by Mike Bernard

Cornish art - Polperro Harbour by Mike Bernard

Today’s Red Rag update features a view of the Cornish fishing village of Polperro. It is an interesting piece of British Art from leading British artist Mike Bernard.

Mike Bernard produces highly textured semi-abstract paintings. He often uses mixed media incorporating both collage and acrylics. Regular subjects for Mike Bernard include coastal and street scenes of the British Sea and Countryside and Italy. Mike says: “What attracts me most is the pattern of buildings, boats and similar features in a scene. I build a painting by putting in blocks of colour to develop a pattern which is pleasing to my eye in colours which are harmonious, bringing in feelings of spontaneity, freshness and freedom.”
